Eating: A Costly Proposition on St. Thomas

Found this article interesting on St. Thomas Source. I know it cost more here, but I didn't think about it being 50% more!
Eating: A Costly Proposition on St. Thomas
by Barbara Birt
May 28, 2008 -- It costs significantly more to eat on St. Thomas than almost any place in the United States, based on a snapshot of food prices in comparison with those in one of the highest-priced cities on the mainland. Prices average 50 percent higher on St. Thomas than in Washington, D.C., according to an independent survey of 63 basic food products conducted by the former director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the V.I. Department of Labor (DOL). "Washington, D.C., has very high food prices, so we're comparing our food prices with a high city, and we're still coming up 50 percent higher," said Dave Barber, who conducted the survey as a personal project to see how prices compare.

I think it's funny that the author calls hot dogs and corn flakes "staples." Really?! I thought staples were milk, eggs, bread, peanut butter... you know, things that aren't meat paste stuffed into a mysterious casing or genetically modified flakes coated in high fructose corn syrup.

That OJ price is ludicrous. I don't drink the stuff, and at that price, I'd refuse to buy it on principle.

Sounds like it's cheap to make things on your own (like a mango salsa) if you can find supplies, but really ridiculous to buy pre-packaged foods.

Curious if you guys find that your food bills have gone way up compared to what you're used to?

Our food bill has definitely gone up since moving here. Some items are drastically more expensive and some are the same or just slightly higher. We've made a few posts with our shopping list and prices

OJ and Milk are two items that are crazy high, but we like both so we bite the bullet and pay the price.
